synopsis

On a sweltering Australia Day in Brisbane, the worlds of three desperate young people collide. Indigenous teen April (Miah Madden), young Chinese woman Lan (Jenny Wu), and Sami (Elias Anton), an Iranian-Australian teen, are each on the run from something. As their stories unfold, farmer Terry (Bryan Brown), Indigenous policewoman Sonya Mackenzie (Shari Sebbens) and homicide detective Mitchell Collyer (Matthew Le Nevez) get swept up in the whirlpool of violence, racism and resentment that unfurls throughout the day. Set over a tense 12 hours, no one is left unscathed as all are challenged on their ideas of family, loyalty and culture.

A provocative and illuminating film from director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog), AUSTRALIA DAY offers a fascinating take on national identity and the pulsing dark heart of ‘the lucky country’.
