🍙 SYNOPSIS 🍙

Four-years-in-the-making, Big in Japan is a hilarious new doco about the nature of fame and the phenomenon of foreign celebrity in Japan. After hearing about the huge demand for foreign talents in Japan, three Aussie filmmakers ship their lives and girlfriends to Tokyo on an outrageous DIY mission to make ‘ordinary’ Dave famous. Along the way, Dave meets an eclectic crew of foreign celebrities at various stages of the fame journey, including American fighter-turned-TV sweetheart Bob “The Beast” Sapp, Adelaide-born crossdressing sensation Rick “Ladybeard” Magarey and Canadian J-pop wannabe Kelsey Parnigoni. But just how far must they go to reach the masses that real celebrity requires?

✨ MEDIA QUOTES ✨

“Hilarious” – Sydney Morning Herald
“This documentary is a heap of fun. It’s a fascinating look at the lesser known, kitschy side of Japanese culture and a really interesting commentary on what the internet has done for celebrity and fame.” – Weekend Notes
“Fame is a drug and Japan is the connection in this fascinating new doco.” – FilmInk

the film

After hearing about the huge demand for foreign talents in Japan, three Aussie filmmakers ship their lives to Tokyo on an outrageous DIY mission to make ‘ordinary’ Dave famous. Along the way, they meet an eclectic ensemble of gaijin tarento (foreign talents) at various stages of the celebrity journey: a feisty Aussie cross-dresser, a starry-eyed Canadian J-pop wannabe and veteran TV sweetheart, Bob “The Beast” Sapp. But just how far must they go to reach the masses that real celebrity requires?

A decidedly anti-Hollywood fame documentary.
