the film

Fashion designer Amy Powney of cult label Mother of Pearl is a rising star in the London fashion scene. Raised off-the-grid in rural England by activist parents, Amy has always felt uneasy about the devastating environmental impact of her industry. When she wins the coveted Vogue award for the Best Young Designer of the Year, which comes with a big cash prize, Amy decides to use the money to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment, and transform her entire business. Over the following three years, her own personal revolution becomes the precursor of a much bigger, societal change.

After the film, there will be a special Q&A featuring the below speakers

Dr. Lisa Lake – Director of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Fashion + Textiles, UTS

Dr Lisa Lake is the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Fashion + Textiles, a UTS partnership with TAFE NSW. She is a pioneer in the Australian sustainable fashion movement, co-founder of Clean Cut, and author of Sustainability with Style. In addition to her expertise on sustainable fashion, Lisa also helped develop the sustainability strategy for the University of Sydney, and previously led the marketing team at the Green Building Council of Australia.

Zoltan Csaki – Founder, Citizen Wolf

Zoltan is on a mission to re-engineer how clothes are made at scale in the 21st century to save our planet. Citizen Wolf combines algorithms and made-to-order manufacturing to create the zero waste, sustainable future the fashion industry so desperately needs: better for customers (custom made to fit), better for makers (ethically made in Australia) and better for the planet (100% circular) all at the same time. Citizen Wolf has been featured on national TV via SBS World News and Shark Tank as well as top tier press such as Vogue, InStyle, Men’s Health, The AFR’s ‘Luxury’ magazine, The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald to name but a few. Zoltan speaks regularly about the journey of Citizen Wolf as well as the intersection of fashion, technology and local manufacturing. Citizen Wolf is his third startup and a certified B Corp.

Jo Gambale – Eco Stylist and Founder, SLOGUE

Fashion magazine editor turned sustainable fashion advocate, Joanne Gambale is on a mission to help circular fashion surpass the fast fashion industry in Australia and beyond. Through her 2020 startup Slogue, she has amassed a client base of new converts to preloved and works as a ‘circular only’ stylist for sustainable brands, musicians and performers, and an educator for local councils, hosting workshops, clothes swaps, preloved and vintage shopping tours and online circular shopping guides. At Vogue Australia from 2007, she now only contributes with content on circular fashion, but more often is the subject of magazine articles herself. Along with Bell Street’s Ali Dibley, Joanne co-hosts a podcast called Questioning Fashion, which looks at our relationship with fashion, exploring its joys and its many issues. As well as her work as Remake ambassador, with local councils, businesses and with the Garage Sale Trail, Joanne continues to collaborate with photographers, artists, actors, musicians and sustainable brands, showing them all the magic of a ‘post-new’ aesthetic, free of the fashion industry’s dictation.

Adam Worling – Director, AWPR

Through his PR agency, Adam has played a pivotal role in establishing the brand presence of renowned names like David Jones, Carla Zampatti, Aje, Ginger & Smart, and the Melbourne Fashion Festival. Beyond his professional achievements, Adam possesses a profound dedication to sustainability and driving transformation towards enhanced ecological integrity. In 2023, he assumed the role of a councillor at the City of Sydney, channelling his focus towards addressing waste management and advocating for systemic changes in consumer behaviour, particularly concerning overconsumption and most recent was elected as the Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee supporting the Lord Mayor Clover Moore
